Three names dominate the shortlist when a contractor goes looking for quantity takeoff software, and they solve three different problems. Bluebeam Revu is a PDF platform with measurement built into it. PlanSwift is a Windows estimating suite. Planmetry is takeoff that runs in a browser.
Compared on a feature grid they look interchangeable. They are not — and choosing on the grid is how firms end up paying for depth nobody uses, or buying a tool the site team cannot open.
Bluebeam Revu was built for the people who live in drawings all day: architects, engineers and general contractors marking up, stamping, comparing revisions and supporting submittal workflows. Measurement is one capability among dozens.
PlanSwift does one job and goes deep. It turns drawings into quantities and quantities into a priced estimate, with assemblies, cost databases and mature Excel integration.
Planmetry is narrower than either. Open a PDF sheet in a tab, measure it with line, area, wall-area, volume and object tools, and the quantities build a takeoff list you export to Excel or CSV. The list does carry cost columns — material price, labour price, install hours, price per unit — and custom fields including formulas, so a basic priced total is possible without leaving it. What it does not have is an assembly library or a maintained cost database, which is the line between a measuring tool and an estimating suite.
If drawings are the whole workflow rather than a step in it, Revu is not really competing on takeoff — it is competing on everything around it. Comparing revisions, running punch lists, stamping submittals, marking up sets for other people to read: its markup and document-comparison features have no equivalent in a focused measuring tool. Replacing Revu with one would leave most of the work homeless.

The step from 240 linear metres of wall to $18,400 installed is where PlanSwift earns its keep. Assemblies attach materials, labour and waste factors to a measurement so the estimate builds itself as the takeoff proceeds, and the Excel integration is mature.
Two conditions make it the obvious answer: the deliverable is a priced bid rather than a quantity list, and bids come often enough to justify a dedicated seat. A maintained assembly library is also a real asset, built up over years — it lives inside the estimating suite, and no measuring tool replaces it.
Time to first measurement. Open a tab, drop in a PDF, measure. No download, no licence activation, no onboarding call. When a client asks for a room's area before the call ends, installation time decides whether the answer arrives now or tomorrow.
Availability on site. Takeoff software assumes a desk. Much of the measuring happens in a van, at a client's kitchen table, or standing in the room being measured. Bluebeam's mobile apps cover this for firms already holding a Revu licence; PlanSwift does not. Automatic scale detection. Planmetry reads the sheet's scale when the drawing is uploaded, handling both metric ratios and US imperial notation, and says so explicitly when it cannot — you are asked to set the scale rather than left with a silent default. Manual calibration is a small task that fails in a large way: get it wrong and every downstream number is wrong with no visible sign, so being told the detection failed is worth as much as the detection itself. Either way, a set of numbers is worth verifying against a known dimension before it leaves the office.
Snapping to the drawing. While drawing, the cursor snaps to the lines and corners of the underlying blueprint. This is what makes a browser tool precise rather than approximate: you are clicking the drawing's own geometry, not eyeballing a position.
Less to roll out. Sending a link is not the same as provisioning a seat. Where measuring is spread across a dozen people who each do a little, the obstacle is often not the software but procurement, licence allocation and "we'll get you set up next quarter." Managed devices and IT policy still apply; browser-based removes a step, not the whole approval chain.

Two caveats carry more weight than the numbers themselves.
Check what the entry tier actually includes. On Bluebeam's pricing page in August 2026, Basics lists length and area measurement only. Perimeter, count, angle and volume begin at Core, and Quantity Link to Excel appears at Complete. Where takeoff is the reason for buying, the relevant price is the tier that includes the measurement types the work requires — and tiers move, so the page is worth reading directly.
Frequency decides value, not the headline figure. A $2,000 licence used for twenty bids a month costs $8 a bid, which is immaterial if it saves an hour each time. A $260 licence used twice a month is expensive. Published pricing also differs from quoted pricing, particularly at the top end. PlanSwift installs on Windows only. It cannot be installed directly on a Mac; Mac users need a virtual machine or a dual-boot setup. For a team on MacBooks or iPads this is not a preference problem but a blocker.
Bluebeam Revu is a Windows desktop application. Revu for Mac reached end of life in June 2023, so Mac users either run Revu through virtualisation or work in Bluebeam's web and mobile apps instead. Those apps are substantial — the pricing page lists markup and measurement on iOS and Android, with offline sync — but they are sold alongside the desktop licence rather than as the whole product, and feature coverage differs from Revu on the desktop.
Planmetry runs in a browser, and the browser is the product rather than a satellite of a desktop licence. Nothing to install, and no difference between the machine at the office and the iPad in the truck. Device behaviour is not identical everywhere: browsers differ, and a managed device can still be locked down.
This is the cost that never appears on the invoice. Bluebeam and PlanSwift are both deep tools, and depth requires training. PlanSwift's pricing page lists two hours of it as part of the purchase.
For daily use that is a fair trade. For one measurement, once, this afternoon, it is a poor one: a tool that needs a training session before producing its first number carries an enormous effective cost for occasional use — and occasional use is a large share of the measuring that actually happens. Is the deliverable a quantity or a priced bid?A quantity — a number taken to a spreadsheet, a supplier or a site — means browser-based takeoff is sufficient. A priced bid built from assemblies, produced repeatedly, means an estimating suite.
How often does measuring happen?Daily, for hours: depth pays for itself and the learning curve amortises. A few times a week in short bursts: it never amortises, and speed usually wins — unless the work must be auditable or repeated across alternates, where the structured tool earns its place regardless of frequency.
Where does the number get needed?At a desk on Windows, all three work. On site, on a phone, with a client waiting, the field narrows sharply.
How many people measure, and how often?One or two full-time estimators: buy dedicated software, and buy the right tier. A dozen occasional measurers: the rollout, not the software, is the real problem.
Does a cost database already exist?If so, it lives in the estimating tool, and leaving that tool means abandoning an asset. Adding a fast measuring tool alongside it is usually better than replacing it.
These are not mutually exclusive, and treating the decision as a single either/or narrows it unnecessarily.
A realistic setup for a small contractor: PlanSwift or Bluebeam on the estimator's desktop for full bid production, and Planmetry on everyone's phone for the steady stream of quick measurements that never justified opening the large tool. The deep licence goes to the person who needs depth. Everyone else gets a link.
That split avoids both failure modes — a heavyweight licence sitting mostly idle, and a team that cannot measure anything without walking to the estimator's desk.
The answer follows from the deliverable, the frequency, the location and the shape of the team — not from the length of a feature list.
